Opening ceremony Elbbrücken subway stop

GAHRENS + BATTERMANN FURNISHES THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE NEW ELBBRÜCKEN SUBWAY STATION IN HAMBURG

On December 6, 2018, the grand opening ceremony of the new subway station “Elbbrücken” took place in Hamburg. For the technical equipment, Hamburg Hochbahn AG relied on the event technology specialist GAHRENS + BATTERMANN.

After five years of construction, the new Elbbrücken underground station was opened in Hamburg. The 1.3 km long constructed section connects the “HafenCity University” station with the new “Elbbrücken” station, the current terminus of the U4 line.

GAHRENS + BATTERMANN was already responsible for the technical staging of the Tunnel Tour U4.0 in 2017. At that time, numerous visitors were able to experience a “view into the future” by means of 360-degree panoramic views through virtual reality glasses and virtually discover the new completed underground station. Project Manager Thomas Grahn and his team provided an enchanting atmosphere and enthusiastic visitors during the tour with an LED light installation of the tunnel section.

Project Manager Thomas Grahn and his colleagues were also responsible for the technical implementation of the event at the opening ceremony in December 2018.

The station scores not only architecturally, the construction project also ran exactly on time and on budget, an important milestone for HOCHBAHN on the way to expanding the subway network. The expectations for an impressive and media-effective opening were correspondingly high. The result speaks for itself!

Together with the planning office Intermediate Engineering GmbH, the G+B team realized an audiovisual staging with more than 200 lamps, including moving lights, LED floodlights, LED tubes and LED PAR spotlights, in the indoor and outdoor areas of the new railroad station. As an additional eye-catcher, six Panasonic PT-RZ21K laser projectors were used to project a video mapping onto the inner facade of the modern building. Lighting design and content creation were carried out by the planning office, while G+B took care of the exact technical implementation.

In addition to the technical staging of the stop, the G+B team also coordinated the erection of a 400-person marquee with glass facade as well as the complete technical equipment including ground support, stage and further lighting technology. For optimal sound reinforcement of the marquee, the G+B technicians used the L-Acoustics Kara system, and a 5 x 3 meter Absen 3.9 mm LED wall formed a visual highlight in the stage background.

Implementing a project of this magnitude is a task that requires precise planning and outstanding teamwork every time. But it was not only the technical planning that presented the people responsible for the opening ceremony of the new Hamburg subway stop with challenges. Due to the special location near the Elbe River, elaborate approval procedures had to be gone through in advance. Numerous approvals were necessary for the realization of the opening ceremony, including from the water police, air traffic control, the HPA, the Oberhafenamt, the DB and the technical supervisory authority for the subway operation. Night shifts, cold and bad weather, as well as work that had to be carried out in part during ongoing subway operations, presented the G+B team with further challenges, but they mastered them all. After three days of set-up and just in time for the opening ceremony, the technicians were ready to welcome the arriving subway passengers with the audiovisual production.
